Meeting the specialized needs of our community.
This technology began years ago in response to concerns about the safety of the nation's blood supply and the needs of patients with deeply held religious convictions or strong personal preferences who chose not to receive blood and blood products. This special bloodless* treatment method is being offered for those in our community who hold these feelings.

*"Bloodless" means medical or surgical treatment without the use of banked (stored) allogenic blood or primary blood components.  Blood loss often occurs during surgery.  A bloodless program endeavors to minimize blood loss by utilizing special blood conservation methods.

A Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program provides care by:
 • Utilizing the skill of physicians and surgeons familiar with non-blood medical managment
 • Ensuring identification of the BMS patient by using special stickers
 • Providing specialized consent forms, which outline the patient's directives regarding the use of alternatives
 • Employs the service of a program coordinator

Today's technology … just for you.
It takes more than a well-qualified medical staff to meet the challenge of bloodless surgery—it takes proper equipment and advanced technology. The Transfusion Free Medicine program at Nacogdoches Medical Center offers:

  • Cell Saver
Continually recirculates the patient's own blood during surgical procedures
  • Oximetry
    Tracks oxygen levels during surgery
  • Bovie Electrosurgical Coagulator
Coagulates or clots a patient's blood during surgery to reduce blood loss
  • Volume Expanders
Intravenous fluids that enhance the circulation of the patient's blood
  • Synthetic Erythropoietin
Stimulates bone marrow to produce red blood cells
  • Laprascopic Surgery
    Minimally invasive surgical technique

Special skills … special services.
A broad range of medical and surgical specialties are available within the Transfusion Free Program such as:

Gynecology, Orthopedic, Urology, Ear, Nose, & Throat, Anesthesiology, Gastroenterology, Family Practice, Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonary, Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, Oncology, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology
